This song is about liberating oneself from the clutches of others' secrets. It has also been an honour to work with Kim and get to witness her brilliance. It was so cathartic and freeing to experiment like this and throw out the rule book. "Unholy" was made in Jamaica and was one of the most glorious creative moments I've ever had as an artist. Smith explained the creative process and the meaning of the song: The song has been described as a "glitchy synthpop cut" featuring a choir and hyperpop sounds, due to its metallic synths that were popularized by Scottish musician Sophie. Petras name-drops Barbadian singer Rihanna in her verse. On 25 August, Smith announced the track's title and a pre-save link. Disclosure also teased the song, playing their remix of it in live sets. The track went viral on the platform, spurring dance trends for over a month before its release. The track was first teased on 18 August 2022, through a clip on TikTok, in which Smith lip-syncs the chorus while Petras dances in a recording studio. The track's melody comes from its use of the double harmonic scale. It was also nominated for the Brit Award for Song of the Year at the Brit Awards 2023, Smith's fourth nomination in the category and Petras' first Brit nomination in any category. The song won the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, marking Smith's first award since 2015 and Petras's first award overall. Outside the United Kingdom, "Unholy" topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States, becoming both Smith's and Petras' first chart topper in the latter, and peaked within the top ten of the charts in Petras' native Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, France, Indonesia and the top 20 in Italy. "Unholy" entered at the top of the UK Singles Chart. And so, Evan had to devise a plan to shoot them in their location - Portugal for Diogo and I think Cary was in Scotland - and then put all the actors together in one scene." Unholy" is a song by British singer Sam Smith and German singer Kim Petras, released on 22 September 2022, as the second single from Smith's fourth studio album Gloria (2023). We couldn't get Cary Elwes and Diogo (Morgado), we couldn't get them back for the second half of filming, they were both overseas, and stuck. Back then, though, when we were doing Unholy, it was people in like Hazmat suits running around, and we were very separated. I mean, here, in Georgia, I test two times a day, every day, for COVID. They're the safest places to be right now. And now, by the way, the only place I feel safe is on sets. Somehow, in all of this, was, oh s-, I've still got to do a performance and put it on screen! It was much more COVID-based than it was film-based for a while. As safe as we were, we still had a positive test when we went back, and so we shut down for another week, and it was a lot of craziness. We were also so early back, the only thing that had been shooting at that point was like Jurassic Park, and we kept hearing that people were getting sick, and they were having to shut down production, and so there was all of that. When we did go back to finish I wasn't even thinking about the movie, to be honest with you, I was way more concerned with safety protocols.
